1509 Numerical Analysis for impact behavior of CFRP composite structures

Fiber reinforced laminated composite materials are widely used for various structures especially for aviation and aerospace structures because of their high strength and stiffness-to-density ratios and superior mechanical properties. However they are easily damaged due to impact load because of their low toughness. Impact tests of composite plates were performed and impact damage was inspected with C-scan and light-microscope. Impact analysis of composite plate was performed with commercial finite element analysis program ABAQUS/explcit to predict impact behaviors and impact damages. Damage model for fiber reinforced laminated composite material was developed based on continuum damage mechanics and it was implemented in the user material subroutine of ABAQUS/explicit, VUMAT. Cohesive zone model was used to simulate delamination damage. Analysis resultes were compared with experimental data for the verification of the damage model.
