A convenient method for the preparation of cyclic amidines from amino amides using bis(trimethylsilyl)acetamide (BSA) as a dehydrating agent has been developed. Treatment of amino amides (1a-c) with BSA in acetonitrile afforded cyclic amidines (2a-c) in 73%, 77%, and 46% yields, respectively.
