Some Observations on Etch Pits and Light Figures Revealed by Chemically Etched Lithium Fluoride Crystal

Observations were made of etch pits formed on {100, {110} and {111} surfaces and of corresponding light figures of LiF crystal etched with (1) 47% HF, (2) 2% aqueous solution of NH_4OH, (3) 1 : 1 mixture of 47% HF and glacial acetic acid plus 1 vol. % of 1% HF saturated with FeF_3, and (4) and (5) 0.01 and 1% aqueous solutions of FeF_3, all at 20℃. The solution (1) produces no etch pits, and the solution (2) sometimes produces etch pits only on {100} surface, whereas an alternating etching with these two solutions reveals clear-cut etch pits on {111} surface. Solutions (3) and (4) produce etch pits on {100}, {110} and {111} surfaces. The solution (5) reveals only minute etch pits on {100} and {110} surfaces. The light figures observed were dependent upon the shape, size, and distribution of etch pits. It was found that light figures revealed by {100} and {110} surfaces etched with solutions (3) and (4) were so distinct as to be applicable for the accurate orientation determination of the crystal.
