• The light figures revealed by and crystal planes developed in single crystals of tetragonal tin etched with various concentrated aqueous solutions of acids, alkalis, or salts for various time-intervals, have been studied and the suitability of observed light figures for the orientation determination has been examined. The observed light figures and developed crystal planes may be classified into two groups. The first group consists of {001}, {100}, {110}, {101}, {301} and {211} light figures which are due to the development of {100}, {110}, {101}, {301} and {211} planes, belonging to the <001>, <010>, <011>, <113>, <111>, and <210> zones, by etching with hydrochloric acid or with a like reagent, and the second group consists of {001}, {100} and {101} light figures which are caused by the development of {100} and {101} planes, belonging to the <001>, <010>, and <111> zones, by etching with aqueous solutions of aqua regia or of salts. These findings indicates decidedly that a light figure does not correspond to a crystal direction but to a crystal plane. Distinct light figures produced by the {001}, {100} and {101} planes of tetragonal tin crystals etched for very short time with aqua regia, with saturated ferric chloride solution, or with saturated ferric sulphate solution are most suitable for the orientation determination.
