Light-Figure Phenomena Revealed and Crystal Faces Developed by Chemical Etching in Copper and α-Brass Crystals

The light-figure phenomena have been observed with single crystals of copper and α-brass etched with various chemical reagents and the applicability of the observed light figures for the orientation determination and crystal faces developed by etching have been examined. The distinct {100}, {110} and {111} light figures, suitable for the orientation works, were revealed in copper and α-brass crystals etched with 20 percent aqueous solution of ammonium persulphate and in alloy crystals containing more than about 20 percent zinc etched with aqua regia plus water (1 : 1), with concentrated hydrochloric acid plus the saturated aqueous solution of ferric chloride (1 : 1), or with 50 percent sulphuric acid plus potassium bichromate (99 : 1). It has been found that crystal faces developed by etching vary systematically with the etching condition and the composition of crystals.
