Production of Single Crystals of Iron-Aluminium Alloys by the Strain-Anneal Method

The production by the strain-anneal technique of circular-rod single crystals, 3 mm in diameter, from iron-aluminium alloys containing less than six percent aluminium has been studied with the purpose of finding out optimum conditions for the decarburization treatment, for the elongation working, for the recrystallization annealing, and for the macro-etching. With an increase of aluminium content, the optimum temperature of the decarburization treatment (for the duration of one day) and the optimum degree of elongation fall respectively from 970℃ and four percent for electrolytic iron to 900℃ and two percent for 6% Al alloy, while the optimum temperature of recrystallization annealing (for the duration of two days) rise from 880℃ for electrolytic iron to 1000℃ for 6% Al alloy. The grain growth is most excellent in 0.5% Al alloy (the maximum length of grain being 16cm) and most inferior in 2.5% Al alloy. As the reagent for macro-etching, concentrated nitric acid plus a small quantity of boiling water is suitable for pure iron and low aluminium alloys, while concentrated hydrochloric acid is adequate for alloys containing more than 2.5 percent aluminium. Dilute nitric acid may be used conveniently for cutting crystals by the paraffin technique, regardless of the aluminium content. It was also confirmed that a polycrystalline layer consisting of one layer of minute grains as existed before the recrystallization annealing remained on the surface of iron-aluminium single crystals thus prepared.
