The Light-Figure Method as Compared with the Back-Reflection Laue Method for Determining Orientations of Metal Single Crystals

The light-figure method is compared with the back-reflection Laue method for determining crystal orientations with reference to the apparatus, procedure, precision and usefulness. It is shown that, though the X-ray diffraction method has generally been highly appreciated, its proper high precision can be retained only when the orientation determination is conducted with a special caution. The light-figure method can be applied for any metal crystal of any orientation and of a fairly large size with a simple apparatus and procedure and the orientation determination can always be made with an accuracy as high as or even higher than that of the back-reflection Laue method.
