The Relationship between the Growth Shape and Growth Anisotropy in Cubic Crystals

It is shown that, based on the fact that the shape of slowly grown crystal is generally a polyhedron surrounded by close-packed faces, the anisotropy of growth rate as the condition for a given polyhedron to be the growth shape of an initially shpere crystal (or of an initially arbitrarily shaped crystal in the case of long-time growth) can be determined. In this paper, the relationship between the growth shape and growth anisotropy is considered for the case of cubic crystals, taking up, for simplicity, only growth shapes surrounded by one, two, or all of {100}, {110} and {111} planes alone. It is shown that the relationship derived here accords well with Spangenberg's observations on the growth shapes of potassium alum crystals and of NaCl crystals contiaining urea.
