Studies on Extraction and Determination of Metal Salts with Methyl Isobutyl Ketone. VII : Photometric Determination of Tungsten in Iron and Steel

The photometric determination of a microamount of tungsten in iron and steel was carried out. Tungsten and molybdenum were separated from the main components of iron and other elements by α-benzoinoxime-chloroform extraction. When the amount of molybdenum in the sample was larger than that of tungsten, most of molybdenum in hydrochloric acid solution was separated from tungsten by methyl isobutyl ketone extraction. After reducing hexavalent tungsten to pentavalent tungsten with stannous chloride in hydrochloric acid solution, thiocyanate complex of tungsten was formed by addition of ammonium thiocyanate. The complex was extracted with methyl isobutyl ketone, and the amount of tungsten was determined by measuring its light absorbancy. When vanadium was not contained in the sample, tungsten was separated from iron and other elements by precipitating their hydroxides with sodium hydroxide in the place of α-benzoinoxime-chloroform extraction method.
