Mossbauer Study of Fe-Ti Alloys Formed at Interfaces between Fe and Ti Thin Films

• The Mossbauer spectra of Ti films evaporated on Fe substrates (Ti/Fe) and on Ti substrates (Fe/Ti) were measured after heat treatment following the evaporation. The spectra were composed of a singlet, a doublet and the familiar bcc-Fe sextet. The singlet was found to be due to crystalline FeTi, whereas the doublet is attributed to crystalline Fe_2Ti in both Ti/Fe and Fe/Ti films annealed at 1000℃ and 700〜1000℃. However, in the Ti/Fe films annealed at 700℃, the doublet is ascribed to amorphous Fe_xTi_<1-x>. The relative amounts of FeTi and Fe_2Ti suggest that Fe atoms diffuse into the Ti substrates in the Fe/Ti films, while Ti atoms diffuse into the Fe substrates in the Ti/Fe films during annealing.
