Appearance Potential Spectra of Cr, Cr_2O_3, and Stainless Steel 304

Appearance potential spectra (APS) of Cr, Cr_2O_3 and stainless steel 304 were obtained. Changes of carbon and oxygen spectra of a pure chromium surface after annealing were observed. The shapes of the carbon K spectrum changed from graphite-type to some other structure and simultaneously the height of the oxygen peak decreased after annealing. The L_3 binding energy of each sample was measured. The Cr-L_3 threshold values of APS for Cr, Cr_2O_3 and stainless steel 304 were 573.9 eV, 575.1 eV and 573.6 eV, respectively. Good agreements were obtained between the L_3 threshold values of APS and the L_3 absorption edges of soft X-ray spectra. The energy shift values of Cr_2O_3 by APS were smaller than the ones obtained by ESCA.
