Surface Shape Changes of Tungsten Emitter Studied by the Field Ion Microscopy

When a tungsten emitter tip was heated in a UHV field ion microscope, complex surface-shape changes took place over the whole tip-cap. At 700-900 K many facets appeared, among which the {211} facets were most prominent. At temperatures above 900 K large-scale hollows were formed in regions near the (211) planes. From the temperature dependence of the engraving depth the activation energies were obtained to be 1.2 and 2.4 eV for faceting and hollowing, respectively. It was suggested that facets were caused by surface self-diffusion along steps, and hollows by some other type of diffusion.
