An Atomic View of Surface Self-Diffusion on the Tungsten Tip with or without High Fields

Surface self-diffusion along steps was observed over the whole tip surface of tungsten at 300-500 K. Diffusion paths were traced for individual surface atoms. The activation energy for self-diffusion was found for each crystallographically distinct region to be 1.19-1.27 eV under zero-field. It was also indicated that the high field F (up to 2.0 V/Å) applied on the surface acted to reduce the activation energy by the amount ΔE_<dF>, ΔE_<dF> (eV)⋍0.047 F^2 (F; in V/Å). In order to explain field effects the potential diagram for a diffusing adatom was drawn by taking into account two repulsive interactions between field-induced dipoles and between induced net-charges.
