Using a field ion microscope, certain aspects of interaction between molybdenum atoms adsorbed on (110) and (112) planes of tungsten were directly investigated. On (110) planes, binding between adatoms in the pair was found to be strongly directional. For the pair with its bond axis parallel to [11^^-0] direction in the substrate, the bonding energy between adatoms was found to be about 0.12 eV. On (112) planes, binding between adatoms in the pair with atoms in adjacent surface channels was found to be rather loose within its bond length ranging from 4.47Å to 5.24Å, suggesting its bonding energy to be more than 0.18 eV. Adsorption sites as well as structures of pairs and clusters were also investigated. It was found that the equilibrium structures of clusters on (110) planes depended sensitively on substrate temperature.
