Field-Ion Microscope Observation of Deformation Twin Induced by Field Stress in Ordered Ni_4Mo Alloy

FIM images of an ordered Ni_4Mo alloy tip showed a narrow band region passing through continuous ordered domains (about 50 nm diameter each). The band region was analyzed by using the crystallographic relation between the disordered FCC and ordered D1_a structures. A great part of the band region which may have been induced by the field stress during field evaporation, consists mainly of ordered domains of β-phase and is in a twin relation with the rest of the area of FIM images when refered to the FCC lattice ignoring the order structure. At some part of the band region, an anti-phase boundary has been detected, which might be formed by a a/2[101]_<FCC> glide dislocation. Thus, it is thought that plastic deformation due to field stress occurs in two modes, twinning and slip.
