• 1-Hydroxy-3-hydroxymethyl-6,7-dimethoxy-4-(3,4-methylenedioxyphenyl)-2-naphthoic acid γ-lactone (II) was synthesized from 3,4-dimethoxy-3', 4'-methylenedioxybenzhydrylidenesuccinic acid (III) by an unambiguous 10-step procedure shown in Chart 1,and was found not to be identical with diphyllin. A revised structure (XII) was proposed to diphyllin by assuming an intermolecular hydrogen bonding to its characteristic lactone carbonyl band of extreme low frequency, 1709 cm^<-1> (Nujol), in the IR spectrum.
