There are only few investigations concerning the bacteria that ferment lactose in aerobic condition, but now we have found an aerobic strain which utilizes lactose as a sole carbon source and forms a specific "Slime" in lactose-yeast extract supplemented with calcium carbonate. The gummy material produced was isolated by pouring culture-filtrate into 2.5 volumes of 99% ethanol containing about 2% NaOH. This crude material contains about 5% Ca and, when dissolved in warm water, gives viscous colloidal solution, η_r=56.03 (1% aq. at 20℃). This material does not reduce FEHLING'S solution, but, after hydrolyzing with mineral acid, the hydrolysate shows about 50% reducing power (as glucose). Therefore, it is assumed that this material should be a new bacterial polysaccharide.
