An improved double-column gas-liquid contactor was developed, which effectively utilizes a gas entrainment process produced by a liquid jet entering the liquid surface. The main features of the apparatus was a circular nozzle producing the liquid jet, an inner column carrying the downward flow of the gas-liquid mixture formed by the liquid jet, and an outer column providing an annular channel for upward flow of the mixture.Effects of liquid flow rate, inner column and nozzle diameters on gas entrainment, gas hold-up and gas absorption rate were first investigated with an air-water system. Then the performance of the apparatus in biological wastewater treatment was studied with activated sludge.The results confirmed that the apparatus was superior in oxygen transfer performance and was suitable for biological treatment of highly concentrated organic wastewater.
