As reported previously, when Nocardia sp. BPM 1613 was grown on the acyclic isoplenoid alkane pristane (2,6,10,14-tetramethylpentadecane) as a sole carbon source, pristanol and pristanic acid, the intermediary products of the pristane assimilation pathway, were accumulated in the culture. These intermediates are considered useful for the synthesis of vitamins E and K_1,and their production was therefore studied in a batch culture. Their specific accumulation rates were maximum in the exponential growth phase : 28 to 31 mg-pristanol/g-cell/h and 8 to 10 mg-pristanic acid/g-cell/h.The maximum concentrations obtained from 30 g/l pristane was 6.8 to 7.1 g-pristanol/l and 1.4 to 1.8 g-pristanic acid/l. Increase of the initial pristane concentration resulted in an almost proportional increase in pristanol yield, but extended the lag period. The lag period could be reduced by the addition of Tween 80. In the late exponential phase, the cells aggregated firmly forming big oily clumps with pristane and the intermediates. With the onset of linear cells growth, the concentration of intermediates started to decrease.
