A closed activated sludge system using pure oxygen was studied to prevent the vaporization of mercury and to accumulate insoluble metallic mercury in the sludge. The mercury elimination rate was lower in the closed system compared with conventional system, but most of the metallic mercury was accumulated in the sludge by using the closed system. In the closed semi-continuous treatment system using a magnetic stirrer for aeration, the mercury accumulation rate reached over 90%, but an increase of mercury concentration in the effluent parallel with the increase of that in the mixed liquor was noticed. In the closed continuous treatment system using a fritted glass diffuser for aeration, above-mentioned increase of the mercury concentration in the effluent was not noticed, and the mercury content of the sludge reached 9% (dry weight base) in 15 days at a mercury loading rate of 40 g/m^3・day.
