The foaming behaviors in stirred tanks of the same dimensions but having three turbine impellers of different sizes were investigated from the changes in the foam-breaking characteristics of a mechanical foam-brealer with a rotating disk (MFRD) which were represented by the changes in the required critical disk rotational speed, N_c. N_c, as a measure of foaming intensity, and they increased with the increase in the air sparge rate Q_v regardless of the speed or the size of the impeller. As for the effect of the impeller speed N_i on N_c, foaming intensified with the increase in N_i at a low N_i region, resulting in an increase in N_c. But the foaming intensity either stayed at an almost constant level or conversely reduced in a high N_i region above a certain value, indicating that N_c either stayed constant or reduced. It was also found that the impeller size exerted significant effects on forming behaviors, depending on the ranges of N_i and Q_v. Futhemore, on the basis of the above experimental results, empirical equations for predicting N_c of the MFRD in stirred tanks equipped with various impellers were obtained.
