Degradation of n-pentadecane (n-C_<15>) and n-hexadecane (n-C_<16>) emulsion by activated sludge acclimated to n-C_<15> was investigated experimentally in the initial concentration range of 0.0468-252 mg/l. Degradation of the emulsion was biphasic, following first-order kinetics with a rate coefficient k of 0.3-0.57 hr^<-1> at 20℃ for first several hours, then showing a marked decrease in k to 0.019-0.058 hr^<-1> at 20℃ after 10-30 hr. This lower k value range corresponded to a remaining hydrocarbon concentration of less than about 1-7% of the initial amount added.Hydrocarbon cmulsion was thus degraded rapidly until less than 1-7% of the initial amount remained, and thereafter at a markedly decreased rate. This percentage shows the critical oil concentration below which it is hard to treat hydrocarbon in wastewater with activated sludge. After k had decreased markedly, the remaining oil was degraded at this low value of k. When further n-C_<15> or n-C_<16> emulsion was added, the oil from the pre-culture (old oil) was degraded independently of this freshly added oil. This suggested that the individual hydrocarbon bulk concentration can not always be used to describe the degradation characteristics.Total oil content, including the oil inside the activated sludge microorganisms in the mixed liquor, and degradation rate were also examined by extracting the oil after grinding the sludge solid in an agate mortar. Simple extraction from the mixed liquor gave about halr the value obtained by ground sludge extraction when no fresh emulsion was added, but the rate coefficient k was almost the same for the two analytical procedures. When fresh emulsion was added, ground sludge extraction gave higher oil concentration, and the initial value of k was about 86% of that obtained by simple extraction. Thus the error in the above results obtained by simple extraction is estimated at about 14% with respect to the initial value of the true degradation rate coefficient k and 100% with regard to total oil concentration remaining in the mixed liquor after k decreased markedly.
