An Assessment of the Safety and Efficacy of an Indwelling Intravenous Oxygenator (IVOX) Device in Sheep

Intravenous oxygenators (IVOXs) have been under development and testing since the beginning of 1980. The objective of this study was to determine the safety and gas transfer efficacy of an indwelling IVOX device placed in the vena cavas of awake normal adult sheep for 7 days. Six sheep received IVOX implantations and 4 sheep served as controls by undergoing sham procedures (including identical instrumentation, medication, anesthesia, and jugular venotomy, except that no IVOX device was implanted). Data from the 6 IVOX implanted animals were compared to data from the sham procedure animals as the basis for determining the safety and efficacy of the IVOX device.
