The ability of cutting fluids to remove the heat generated in cutting, namely the cooling ability, has not been clarified yet. The present experiments were conducted on the cooling of notched bars and also welded junctions constructed of cutting tool and work materials, in which the heat was generated artificially by an electrical current at their narrowest cross sections, using water-soluble type and non-soluble type grinding fluids and cutting oil. The experimental results show that the temperatures obtained using different cutting fluids at the narrowest cross section are nearly equal even though they had appreciable differences in heat transfer coefficient. And it is also found that the difference in the cooling ability of cutting fluids can be represented by diminished values of the difference in their heat transfer coefficients. Therefore, the temperature at the chip-tool interface can not be lowered remarkably by water which has a heat transfer coefficient 10 times greater than that of the non-soluble fluids. The most important thing in reducing the cutting temperature is to minimize the heat generated at the cutting edge by flooding with cutting fluids having greater lubrication ability.
