Contact and bending stresses of Novikov gears are calculated by using Hertz's equation and the moment distribution of a very long cantilever plate under a load of transverse concentrated force. In the calculation of the bending stress the load acting on the tooth surface is broken up into a large number of small concentrated forces, and then the sum of the stresses caused by each of the forces is taken as an approximate bending stress in Novikov gears. The authors conducted the endurance running tests about nine pairs of Novikov gears having different sizes and materials, which were manufactured in their laboratory. The test results showed that the allowable peripheral force estimated by the stress calculation of the authors agreed fairly well with the peripheral force when the tooth failure occurred in the running test. As Novikov gears have no profile contact, their gearing accuracy is apt to decrease in the load running compared with the case of involute profile gears.
