A study was conducted on the relationship between the increase in hardness due to rolling contact and the pitting fatigue limit. Results obtained are as follows : (1) Allowable contact stress, namely shakedown limit, for pure rolling elements made of steel which have work-hardening ability can be shown by p_<jmax> = (0.42 〜0.89) H_B', where H_B' is Brinell hardness after an arbitrary number of rotations at the point where reversed shear stress caused by the contact stress is maximum. (2) Theoretical pitting fatigue limit can be shown by p_w =0.4 H_B'=0.4C H_B, where H_B is the Brinell hardness of the specimen before running, and the maximum value of C obtained form authors' experiment was about 2 in the case of carbon steel (H_B =160). (3) It is better not to consider that the hardening in rolling contact is of fatigue hardening nature as in the case of rotating bending, because the increase in hardness caused by the cyclic plastic deformation at the subsurface of rolling element in this case is being performed under a hydrostatic pressure condition.
