On Ideal Shapes of the Relieved Surface of Hob Tooth

The gear hob should generate exactly an originally specified tooth form even after re-sharpening. According to the manufacturing method now in use, the solid hob is relieved by feeding a grinding wheel to the direction of hob radius, and the built hob is relieved by inclining the blade made as a segment of thread with continuous surface. Even if re-ground precisely in a specified way, these hobs always have their peculiar tooth profile errors on the profile of re-sharpened cutting edge. In this paper, the ideal shapes of relieved hob tooth and the profile of the grinding wheel to grind such a tooth are made numerically clear, and the new manufacturing methods of both solid hob and built hob are introduced.
