Neutron Scattering Study of Magnetic Successive Phase Transitions in RbNiCl_3

Neutron scattering shows that two magnetic phase transitions occur in thetriangular lattice antiferromagnet RbNiCl, in which only one phase transition hasbeen observed. Ordering of magnetic moments parallel and perpendicular to the c-axis occurs at 11.25 K and 11.11 K, respectively, as commonly seen in Ising-likeHeisenberg antiferromagnets on triangular lattices. The 73 exponents of the paralleland perpendicular sublattice magnetizations are precisely determined to be p,=0.27 : 0.01 and /3.=0.28:0.01. They do not correspond to the theoretical predic-tion 73,=p.=0.345 supporting the three-dimensional X Y universality, which sug-gests that the observed 73 exponents are modified by a crossover effect from either thethree-dimensional SO(3) universality or the three-dimensional .s'.
