Raman Scattering Study of the Soft Phonon Mode in the Hexagonal Ferroelectric Crystal KNiCl_3

Raman spectra of some phonon naodes of the hexagonal f'erroelectric crystal KNiCl3 are ob-tained in the temperature range between 290 K and 590 K, which includes the structural phasetransition point 'Z'z(::561 K) at which previous meastrrements of dielectric constant and spontaneous polarization as a f'unction of temperature had shown that KNiCl3 undergoes a transitionbetween polar phases II and III. An optical birefringence nueasurernent carried out as a conaple-ment to the present Ranaan scattering revealed that this transition is of second order. Towardsthis transition point, the totally symmetric phonon mode with the lowest f'requency observedin the room-tetnperature phase was found to soften with increasing temperature. The presentresults provide new information on the phase-transition mechanism and the space groups of' thehigher (II)- and loxver (III)-synametric phases arotnnd 'Z'2.
