The magnetic anisotropy of rare-earth iron intermetallic compounds containing cobalt and carbon, Sm_2(Fe_<1-x>Co_x)_<17>C_y (0≤x≤0.5 and 0≤y≤0.5), was investigated.. They crystallized in rhombohedral symmetry of Th_2Zn_<17>-type structure, and the easy magnetization direction (EMD) changed from the basal plane to the c-axis of the Th_2Zn_<17>-type structure with increase of the contents of Co and carbon, so that the complete uniaxis anisotropy was realized on Sm_2(Fe_<0.7>Co_<0.3>)_<17>C_<0.3>. The Curie temperature is elevated by substitution of Co for Fe and interstitial addition of carbon, and the effect of Co was marked compared with that of carbon.
