Growth Kinetics of Domain Structures under Applied Fields in Crystals with an Incommensurate Phase : The Case of No Lifshitz Invariant

Growth kinetics of domain structures in an incornmensurate phase under an applied field isstudied by solving the kinetic equation numerically. A two-dimensional model, applicable tothe crystals such as NaN0x and SC(NH2)2, is adopted. In a weak electric field the amplitudeof the incommensurate rnodtrlation increases at first and then the annihilation of phase defectsproceeds as time goes on. On the other hand, in a strong electric field the appearance ofthe incommensurate strtrcttrre is entirely suppressed and the ferroelectric state is establishedimmediately after quenching. In an intermediate strength of the electric field the nucleation ofthe incotnmensurate phase takes place at various positions and then tlaeir growth ['ollows with aconstant velocity.
