Optical Absorption in Band-Edge Region of (CH_3NH_3)_3Bi_2I_9 Single Crystals

• Optical absorption spectra were measured around the band edge in (CH3NH3)3Bi3Ig singlecrystals. In the very thin crystals, an intrinsic exciton band appears clearly at 2.51 eV at lowtemperatures, and the absorption peak remains even at room tennperature reflecting a largebinding energy of rnore than 300 men. The exciton band does not show a discontinuous shiftnear the temperature where the rrrethylarntnoniuun ions induce a structural phase transition. Thisfact indicates that the exciton states are independent of the methylannmonium tons. The originof the exciton band is exatmined on the basis of the annealing elect on the absorption bandsin vacuum-evaporated films. The lower energy tail of the exciton band obeys the Urbach rulebetween 78 and 350 K. The detailed analysis by the Urbach rule reveals that the exciton-phononinteraction in the present system is relatively strong.
