Strong Pressure Effect on the Electrical Resistivity of BaCo_<1-x>Ni_xS_2

Electrical resistivities p of BaCou-.Ni.Sz, which has a layered structure and exhibits the Motttransition with varying .11', have been found to be strongly sensitive to pressure over a very wideternperature region. The pararnagnetic insulator state, wlaich exists in the region of x< 0.15above the N!el temperature IN, exhibits a transition to a rnetallic state at a rather S1118.11 value ofapplied pressure p. The ternperature Tu, at which the resistivity p exhibits anomalous increasewith decreasing T, rapidly decreases with increasing p and becomes zero at the critical valtteof p ::: p.(r) (< l5kbar for x >0.05). The pararnagnetic state thus obtained exhibits roughlyT'-like dependence of the resistivity. The rnetal-insulator transition of the present system isknown to be easily controlled by the external pressure.
