Raman Study on the High Temperature Transition in V_2O_3

We have measured the Raman scatterings of V.0. and (Vg.gg5Crg....).0, inthe temperature range between 300 and 600 K. The Raman frequencies of A..phonon modes in V.0. show some softening and recovery with a minimum at480 K in the region of the high temperature transition. Those in (V..g..Cr.....).0. decrease monotonically with temperature. The ratio of the scattering intensityof the lowest frequency E. mode to the lower frequency A.. mode decreases withtemperature in V.0.. On the other hand, the ratio in (V..gg,Cr...)5).0, isrelatively independent of temperature. These experimental results are discussedin light of the two-bands crossing model proposed by Zeiger for the high tem-perature transition in V,0.. The Raman lines due to A.. phonon mode show ananomalous asymmetric line shape, which is interpreted by the Fano resonanceeffect between the A.. phonon and the electronic transitions in an a..-bondingband.
