Anomalous Magnetostriction in CeAg_<1-x>In_x

The thermal expansion, magnetization and magnetostriction of CeAg. ,In. with0<,v<0.5 have been measured between 4.2 K< 7'<300 K and in magnetic fields of upto 65 k0e. At its cubic-tetragonal transition temperature, the lattice contractsdrastically with decreasing T for ,v!0.01, whilc for x=0, no thermal expansionanomaly is found at the quadrupole ordering temperature. Anomalously large and ir-reversible magnetostriction is observed for ,v=0.01 and 0.03. Such behavior is inferpreied in terms of the redistribution of the tetragonal phase domains induced by anapplication of magnetic field.
