Pressure-induced phase transition II=I of bismuth which started from phase INN(process A) as well as from phase I (process B) was investigated by detecting thepressure change in the pressure chamber and the temperature change of bismuthitself. The transition behavior for process A was quite different from that for processB. In process A the initiation pressure P. for the occurrence of the transition waslowered and the initiation time At was elongated significantly compared with that inprocess B. In the limit of At to infinity P. was in good agreement with the transitionpressure for process B, which suggests that certain kind of suppressive force againstthe occurrence of the transition develops in process A and that it relaxes very slowlywith time.
