Polarized reflection and absorption spectra, FT-IR atad R21111011 spectra of' a 2-(2,4-dinitrobetazyl)pyridine (a-DNBP) single crystal xvere tneasttred in order to eltrcidate the elec-tronic states and vibrational naodes relexxart'rt to the photoindtrced intrauanolecttlar proton tratns['er(PIPT). Tlae naolectrlar or bital ?tnd electronic ?tbsorption spectra of' three isouners (CH., NH anadOH forrtas) of' ct-DNBP xvere atlso carlcul?tted. Fr'otta tlae pot;trized reflection spectra, xve f'otrndthat the Davydov splitting for the lowest ttlloxx'ed transitiora is considerably large, sttggestingtlaat the iratermolectrlar interaction is large. Tlae calctulatiora shows th?tt the HOIVIO-+LUlNzIOtransition of the CH2 f'orrn is very xveak ?tnd the lc.cwest alloxved arbsorptiota l.>and locarted at antrltraxxiolet region unaizuly conaes fronaa both the 2nd HOIIVIO-+LUM0 and HOIVIO-+2nd LU.kIOtransitions. On the otlaer harad, the lowest absorption 1c?tnds of' the NH ?tnd OH fornas located ata visible region are dtre to tlae HOXIO-+LUNIO tr?rtasition. Tlae resttlts f'rotn the calctrlation arequalitatively good agreement w'itla the cclrserved absorjction spectr;'t, We f'otrnd tlaat new strotagvibrational peaks art 488, 1293 anal 3386 ctaa ' appear af'ter [JV irradiation. The low f'reqtrencytorsional taaodes below 500 Clll ' are znost likely relexzant to the PIPT reaction of o-DNBP.
