Hindrance Factors for First-Forbidden Beta Decays of Medium and Heavy Nuclei

It has been shown that the first-forbidden beta matrix elements, <τrY_1> and <τ[σ×rY_1]J>, are generally hindered by factor ap 3 compared with the single quasiparticle values. The isospin (spin) core polarization effect on the hindrance is discussed. Various theoretical methods to treat the effect are described. Numerical calculations are carried out for some nuclei with Nap82 and RaE. It is concluded that the isospin (spin) polarization effect plays an important role in the hindrance phenomena.
