Theory of Isobaric States and Hindered Fermi Nuclear Matrix Elements

The hindered Fermi matrix elements for beta decays are investigated theoretically. For that purpose previously proposed techniques are used : a) the series expansion of the isospin projection operators, and b) the effective transition operator for hindered processes. The physical meaning of the effective beta coupling constant for heavy nuclei is clarified. Also a theory of the isobaric states, which were experimentally discovered in the (p, n) reactions, is presented in terms of the projection operator formalism. It is shown that the observed magnitudes of the hindered Fermi matrix elements and the widths of the isobaric states are mutually consistent. Since the Fermi transition is the most fundamental of all the beta processes, it is hoped that the present arguments give a clue to the complicated beta systematics. It is also asserted that a serious breakdown of charge-symmetry for nuclear forces is highly unlikely.
