Oscillatory Dynamical Correlations and Elementary Excitations in Liquid He^4 : Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics

Elementary excitations in liquid He^4 are studied by using a memory function approach to a density-density response function. It is shown that an oscillatory relaxation of an effective potential or memory function is crucial for understanding excitation spectra below the lamda point, and the so-called two-branch structure is naturally accounted for by such dynamical correlations. Good agreement is obtained between the result of numerical calculation and that of experiments for the dispersion relation for elementary excitations, the strength of the phonon-roton branch and its fraction in the f-sum rule. The effect of Bose-condensation is also taken care of in the density-density response function for a reference system to explain the temperature-dependence of the roton energy.
