The scattering of lattice solitons from a mass impurity is investigated theoretically and numerical-experimentally on a cubic nonlinear lattice system. During the transient time in which the scattering occurs, the dynamical behavior of the system is analyzed based on the scattering theory of liner waves. The theory shows that an incident soliton is disintegrated into the reflected and the transmitted waves which are independently governed by the Korteweg-de Vries equation in a continuum limit. The excitation of the impurity mode due to the interaction with a soliton is also discussed and the mass ratio and the soliton width dependence of the amplitude is obtained. These theoretical results are directly compared with those of the numerical experiments.
