Influence of Bovine Dentin Site on the Bond Strength of Resin Cement

The purpose of this study is to investigate the influences of types of resin cements and dentin site(crown and root part)on the adhesion of resin cement to dentin. Three types of resin cements; Super-Bond C&B, Bistite II and Scotchbond Resin Cement were used. The tensile bond strength of each resin cement to crown and root dentin of bovine incisors was measured after 24 hours immersion in water at 37℃. Super-Bond C&B showed no significant difference in bond strength between crown and root dentin(p>0.05), with values at approximately 14-15 MPa. On the other hand, Bistite II and Scotchbond Resin Cement showed significanly lower bond strength to root dentin than to crown dentin(p<0.05). High-resolution microfocus X-ray CT revealed that the degree of calcification of bovine root dentin was lower than that of bovine crown dentin. Modified hydrochloric acidcollagenase treatment of dentin showed a different arrangement of collagen fibers. Collagen fibers were irregularly arranged in the crown dentin, but were arranged regularly and perpendicular to the dentinal tubules in the root dentin. Scanning electron micrographs showed removal of smear layer and the opening of dentinal tubules both on the crown and root dentin surface after pretreatment with Super-Bond C&B. Wider opening of the dentinal tubules was observed on crown dentin surfaces than root dentin surfaces, and residual peritubular dentin was observed on the crown dentin after pretreatment with Bistite II. Etchant of Scotchbond Resin Cement Produced no wide opening of dentinal tubules on root dentin. It was concluded that differences in resin cement type and dentin region influenced the bond strength of resin cements to dentin.
