Influence of silane coupling agent on the bonding of orthodontic brackets to porcelain teeth

The purpose of the present study was to assess the effectiveness of two types of commercially available silane coupling agents used with Superbond C & B for bonding orthodontic metal bracket to porcelain teeth. Orthodontic metal brackets were bonded to porcelain surface with one of four protocols : (1) porcelain tooth was etched with phosphoric acid and Porcelain Primer (PP, one-bottle type) was applied twice on the etched porcelain without rinsing the remaining phosphoric acid, (2) PP was applied on a non-etched porcelain surface, (3) porcelain tooth was etched with phosphoric acid and Porcelain Liner M (PLM, two-bottle type) was applied on the etched porcelain without rinsing the remaining phosphoric acid, (4) PLM was applied on a non-etched porcelain surface. The shear bond strengths were measured after immersion in water at 37℃ for 24hours. PP gave significantly higher bond strength than PLM on etched porcelain surface (p<0.05), and PLM showed significantly higher bond strength than PP on non-etched porcelain surface (p<0.05). Phosphoric acid etching produced significantly higher shear bond strength than non-etching when Porcelain Primer was used (p<0.05). When PLM was used, no significant difference was found between with and without etching (p>0.05). The adhesive remnant indices were not significantly different among four procedures. PP and PLM may be useful for bonding orthodontic metal brackets to porcelain teeth.
