This study was designed to investigate the effects of bromazepam, diazepam and placebo on subjective feeling psychomotor performance and heart rate in normal volunteers. Especially authors aimed to clarify the differential effects of bromazepam and diazepam. Seventy-five male healthy volunteers, university students, were divided into three groups randomly, that is placebo group, diazepam (5mg) group and bromazepam. (5mg) group. Each group consisted of high anxiety' group with high scores in Taylor's Manifest Anxiety Scale and low anxiety group with low scores. The mirror drawing test was used as a psychomotor performance test. The heart rate was measured by a pulse meter-Subjective feeling was measured by the self-rating scale. which consisted of eight items and each item was rated by seven grades. The main results were as follows l) Diazepam showed sedative effects such as "feel calm", "feel sleepy" and "feel tired", whereas broma-zepam showed mood elevating effects such as "feel strong" and "feel vividly". 2) Self reports showed that the benefical effects were higher incidence in bromazepam than in diazepam and placebo. The non'benefical effects were higher in bro-mazepam and diazepam than in placebo. 3) In the task performance of the mirror drawing test, placebo showed no difference between high and low anxiety groups. Diazepam increased the task performance at the first trial of post-drug period in high anxiety group, and after then no difference was found between two groups. Bromazepam increased the task performance in high anxiety group and decreased it in low anxiety group after the second trial of post-drug period. 4) Bromazepam, diazepam and placebo showed different patterns of heart rate change in high anxiety group.
