Today, Judo is recognized worldwide as a sport. From Japan's position as the country of origin of Judo, the internationalization of Judo raises serious issues in the cultural and traditional aspects of Judo. In order to tackle these issues which are the key to the future development of Judo, we have studied the Physical and mental condition of judo students in different parts of the world. From the results we will attempt to define the actual problems and pinpoint the areas that need adjustment. This is the second study on the physical and mental condition of European Judo students following the first study which was published last year. For this survey, we distributed a questionnaire composed of nineteen questions in English, French and German to seven different foreign Judo students from Great Britain, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium and Italy. This questionnaire was distributed at meetings and training camps in those countries between October, 1988 and March, 1989. A total of 999 responses were considered to be reliable and applicable to this study. The result of the survey showed the tendency of Japanese Judo to be of technique and European Judo to be of power. However, because it was found that the practice of Judo varies from country to country and each country's Judo has its own unique features, it was concluded that independent studies of each country necessary in the future. Furthermore the following questions concerning mental training and the necessity of the open weight category were added to the questionnaire for the first time. Sufficient replies from the European countries could not be obtained for the question on mental training, but the necessity of having open categories could be seen from the question naire results. Considering these results, we would like to further study the actual condition of Judo in different parts of the world, and would further hope to consider the adjustments in the cultural and traditional aspects of Judo and the future of Judo.
