Improvement of Tokai University's Solar Car for "1996 World Solar Challenge" and It's Results

Mass consumption of fossil fuels has caused severe problems for mankind, including depletion of satural resources and pollution of the global environment. Responding to this situation, solar cars that are powered by clean energy, have drawn attention worldwide for their ability to solve some important environmental issues. Tokai University has developed a solar car the "Tokai-51SR" and participated in the WSC'93 solar car race. In order to "re-challenge" the WSC'96 solar car race, performance of the Tokai University solar car was improved by the following innovations : ・ reduction of rolling resistance by improving streering mechanism, ・ improvement of tranmission power losses by using the wheel in motor, ・ achievement of high efficiency solar energy conversion by arrangement of solar cells having similar specifications. As a result of the above modifications, 93% of the total area of the Tokai University Spirit solar car was covered with solar arrays, the conversion efficiency was 12.4%, and the rolling resistance coefficient was reduced by 10%. The total power generated was 40.6kWh. The average running speed of the car had been recorded 50.3 km/h and the distance of 3010km was covered in 8 days.
