ESR Studies on Quasi One-Dimensional Spin System TiOBr(Condensed Matter: Electronic Structure, Electrical, Magnetic and Optical Properties)

Magnetic properties of a quasi one-dimensional spin system of TiOBr have been studied mainly by the electron spin resonance (ESR). Combining the results of the present studies with those of TiOCl, we point out that the anisotropy and the T dependence of the ESR profile widths of TiOX (X=Cl and Br) can be understood by considering the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction. The difference of the g-values between TiOCl and TiOBr can be understood by considering the crystal field strength, which is weaker for the larger volume of the TiO_4X_2 octahedra. Arguments on possible effects of orbital fluctuations are also given.
