An Aspirating and Dispensing Device in the Nanoliter Range Using Piezoelectric Transducer

A new nanoliter pipetting device is proposed. The device can both aspirate and dispense liquid. For aspiration, a piezoelectric transducer vibrates a glass capillary that holds a sample liquid in the longitudinal resonant mode. As a result of this vibration, an ultrasonic pump action is caused, and liquid is aspirated into the capillary. For dispensation, the transducer moves the capillary in the opposite direction. By this movement, pressure waves are generated in the capillary, resulting in the dispensation of a small droplet from the nozzle. To understand the basic performance of this pipetting device, we measured the relationship between driving voltage and aspiration rate. We have also measured the effect of driving voltage on dispensed drop volume. The result shows that the device can aspirate purified water in the range from 24 μL/s to 61 μL/s. The device also can dispense a drop of 2 nl to 8 nl.
