The 4–0 band of the A$^{2}\Pi_{i}$–X$^{2}\Sigma^{+}$ transition of the CN radical produced by the dissociative excitation reaction of BrCN with the microwave discharge flow of Ar was observed by laser induced fluorescence (LIF) spectroscopy. The absolute number density of the CN(X$^{2}\Sigma^{+}$), $v=0$ level was evaluated to be $5.8(3)\times 10^{13}$ m-3 by an analysis based on a spectral simulation and on a calibration against Rayleigh scattering by Ar atoms.
