A Numerical Consideration of the Effect of an Antistatic Agent on Electrical Conduction in Polyethylene

The electrical conduction mechanism of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) films which contain an antistatic agent (AS-1) is discussed through a numerical method. The simulations were carried out on a model in which charge carriers were assumed to be electrons injected from the cathode by the Schottky effect and dissociated from donor sites by the Poole-Frenkel effect, and the ionized donor sites were immobile. The calculated currents agreed well with the experimental current-voltage and current-time characteristics. The numerical simulation also showed the anomalous discharge current and the formation of hetero space charge which was found in thermal-pulse-current experiments. This model explained the high-field conduction of HDPE doped with AS-1.
